Invest in your relationship with your horse and learn how to become the best partner for them. While proper training can help your horse develop a foundation and understand how to manage their nervous system so they can be more forgiving of a learning human, it is crucial to educate yourself in how to read your horse, understand what they are communicating, and respond appropriately. As you develop your own compassionate leadership skills, you'll feel confident solving problems and training any behavior.

Horses are not machines to be fixed or computers to be programmed. They are living, breathing, thinking social animals and they require a partner who sees them as such. No amount of training from any trainer can create a horse that is exempt from raising and lowering to the skills and expectations of their human partner. Whether you believe yourself to be a horse trainer or not, the truth is that we are training our horses one way or another with every interaction. This is why "problem behaviors", anxiety, and frustration tend to reappear when a horse comes home from the trainer. It's not that the trainer didn't do their job, it's that the horse needs clear communication and understanding from their handler.

It is for these reasons that I've shifted my energy away from training and towards full-time education.
